I just finished reading a blog from a fellow believer, Jim, who reminded me again that, "Your salvation does not hang in the balance because of your performance of good deeds." A few weeks ago our assistant pastor, spoke on Romans 7:14-20.We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.c For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

I can very well identify with Paul, even when we strive to live as Christ modeled for us, there are times I fail. But you know, even you made no mistakes, and everything you did was good, it is filthy rags in comparison to what Christ did for us. I am thankful for God's mercy and grace and that He gave His son to die in our place.

Knowing ahead of time that Pastor Rose would use this Romans passage for the message, I asked to share my testimony in song, I Have Come by the Way of the Cross. (I found a video clip of the same song by TaRanda Greene. Hope you enjoy it. )

Prayer

Dear Father, Thank you for your grace and mercy in while we were in sin you took the shame and guilt for us. Forgive me for the times that I fail you. Father, help me to accept my gift of salvation and stop trying to earn it. Show me the things you want me to do. I want to serve you out of my love and gratitude for what you did for me. A "Cup" or "Pitcher"

As I opened my mail today to getmy Affirmation from God, through a trusted friend, Tom, the Holy Spirit spoke into my life.He talked about us responding to each call with obedience, saying, "Different callings, differentpurposes but we are the one. God created us in the womb for His purpose andwithout ceasing we are being prepared. We are also being used to prepare, toencourage, to confirm, and to help. It is up to us; no one else. What do you know you must do today? You may be the onlyone."

I must confess, that I haveprayed that my territory would be increased, that God would open greater doorsof opportunity. Maybe we all have thought at times, if only I had anopportunity as Beth Moore or John Piper, then I could influence thousands forJesus. There are two observations made from our scriptureconcerning our calling and our obedience. 1) Paul points out the attitude weshould have toward our mission, “But who are you, Oman, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it,`Why did you make me like this?'" Does not the potter have the right tomake out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some forcommon use?” Romans 9:20,21. God created us. He is the potter. Ifwe were designed as a “cup” with a one to one ministry or a “pitcher” reachingmultitudes we are called to fulfill our mission. 2) There is a reward for beingobedient, “if we are faithful andobedient with what God has entrusted us, then he will put us in charge of greaterthings,”Matthew 25:23.

My desire is to be obedient to what God calls me todo each day and interestingly enough each day brings it’s own opportunities.The one thing that we cannot know is just who we influence each day, sometimeseven unaware that we did anything. The world’s eyes are watching each and everyFollower of Jesus, so we must be faithful regardless how small the task mayseem.

Since Jesus Came into My Heart

Thoughtfor Today:

What better way to begin worship than to come intoJesus presence singing, "We HaveCome into his House," and "HolyGround" and “Since Jesus Cameinto my Heart,” followed by a prayer was inviting the Holy Spirit toprepare our hearts to hear the message from God. For some 25 minutes I watchedas a group of people went through a motion singing, "Since Jesus came into my heart. Since Jesus came into my heart. Floodsof joy o’er my soul like the sea billows roll. Since Jesus came into my heart." Howcan a group of people stand and sing about the joy in their heart but all theiractions are as though they have no joy, no hope?

We all have burdens that can weigh us downand sap the very energy from our bodies. However, I have found when you come into thepresence of Jehovah, for a moment your troubles vanish, your heart is mended, and you can experience the joy that comes only in knowing that your joy is found inJesus. “Floods of joy o’er my soul likethe seas billows roll,” should be the result of knowing that our soul is safewith Jesus.

Application:

Whatis the source of your joy?
Ifjoy comes from having your name written in heaven, then why are so many "followers" of Jesus living as though they have no hope?
HasJesus made a difference in your life?

Prayer:

Dear Father, may “floods of joy o’er my soul likesea billows roll,” that the world may know of the joy you have placed within meand that you will be glorified, in Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Your Baptism

Scripture: This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you also - not the removal of dirt from the body, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, it saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 3:21

Thoughts for the Day: Many individuals can remember as a child wanting Jesus in their lives. Teachers do a good job explaining a loving, accepting Jesus who died for their sins. A person is then baptized to share with their family and friends the decision they have made in their lives. Tell me about your experience with Jesus? Do you remember when you accepted Jesus into your life? Were you baptized? Then what happened?

Baptism is symbolic...

1) Of what Christ did for you on the Cross. Because of our sin nature, we sin, and we are not able to justify ourself. You may be self-made, have climbed the ladder of worldly success, but you are not able to save your own souls. You may not announce it to the world but within time you will come to that knowledge. Jesus gave his life to pay the price for our sins. He died, was buried, and was resurrected. He was victorious over the grave. We cannot do anything for ourselves but that we accept the gift of eternal life we can have through Jesus Christ. Baptism is symbolic of Jesus death, burial, and resurrection.

2) Of what Christ has done within you. At baptism we die to ourself; we are buried, our sins and all; and arise to a new life in Christ. This means that we no longer live for ourselves, or by the world's standard, but we focus on Jesus Christ and seek to be obedient to God's calling in our life.

Baptism does not save a person. A person accepts Jesus way of salvation and this decision is followed by baptism to show what has already happened in the person's life.

Application:

What did your baptism mean to you?
Did it represent a changed life?
If Christ has not made a difference in your life, accept Him and be baptized.

Prayer: Dear father, thank your loving act in giving of you son Jesus, that through his death, burial, and resurrection, we can have life. Help me to not take this act lightly. Help me to die to myself and be obedient to your calling on my life, in Jesus name I pray, Amen.

My Grace is Sufficient

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

Thought for the Day

Do we really understand the depths of this promise? Not long ago I attended a spiritual retreat. I experienced a happening in my life that will be forever stamped on my mind. The second night fear struck me as never before. I went to two of the ladies and we prayed together. Not really understanding what all I had experienced, we decided that if God were showing me something, he would complete the work that he had started. I went about my day praying for an understanding.

Then sometime during the third night I was awakened again. The same fear surrounded me. Rather than alarm anyone else, I decided to call upon my God, for he promises that his grace is sufficient, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Several hours passed as I held to the Word of God, the power of the Cross, the light of Jesus Christ in my life lying there in my bunk. All along I have told individuals that God would give them strength to overcome or to enable them to do whatever they needed to do.

False, we have no strength. We are all cowards when it comes to standing firm. I realized that I had no strength. It is only in the strength of God, only through Christ's power that rest in me am I able. That I am able to do anything. Until we grasp this truth we continue to wrestle within ourselves to be obedient in Christ, for there are way too many things that just seem like giants in our life.

What fear do you have in life? What are you facing that absolutely shakes your tree of life. Are you rooted in God grace. If not, your tree will be uprooted. By the power and grace of Jesus Christ I was able to stand firm.

Friend, God's grace is sufficient for all your needs. Call upon him today that his power and grace may rest on you.

2) Do you believe that God's power is made perfect in our weakness?

3) Do you act upon the power made available through Jesus?

Prayer:

Dear Father, by your divine power you have provided us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Jesus Christ who called us by his own glory and goodness. In my weakness you are strong to enable me to be the person you designed me to be. Help me to be obedient in all your ways as I rest in the truth, that in your power all things can be accomplished. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

A Year With Jesus

WWJD, What Would Jesus Do? Before we can answer the question we have to know Jesus. The sad reality is that many people wear these bracelets and t-shirts, post stickers on their cars, and yet have no clue as to how Jesus would answer. We base what we know about Jesus on what we have heard and not on what we know. To know Jesus we must spend time with him. R. P. Nettelhorst suggest, A Year with Jesus. He has done a remarkable work in putting this devotional together. This book caught my interest because I do not usually focus on Jesus words. Not that it does not matter, I just believe that all the Bible is God breathed. However, he impressed on me the idea that if I want to know Jesus I need to know and reflect on His words.

Recently I went on a spiritual retreat and has an absolute wonderful time focusing on my relation with Jesus. Upon my return, my husband and I wanted to began a family devotional time together. We have tried with many failures to study together, we start out strong then fizzle out. Then this book came in the mail. Two things stand out about this book of devotions. 1) The themes are so relevant; from love/hate, truth/lies, arrogance/humility... to life and death. 2) It is Jesus actual words. What better way to pursue Jesus than to spend 365 days studying his words. Think about the impact upon your life of staying in the word for the next year.

If you are struggling with a devotional for the coming year, get a copy of A Year with Jesus, and an extra one for a friend for Christmas, birthday, or any other special day. More that just checking off that you have done your devotional for the day you will have spent time with Jesus, if you will, in the presence of Jesus. The days are not dated so it can be started any day of the year.

Thanksgiving is Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is not only supplying the needs of others but is our expression of thanks to God.

Scripture:
This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:12-15

I am writing this in response to a blog a friend of mine wrote. Thanks Tom for inspiring me to expand on your words of wisdom.

I have heard it over and over, "Thanksgiving is my most favored holiday." Some may think, "Why not Christmas, the day celebrated for Christ birth, or Easter, the day we remember the death, burial, and resurrection of our Savior and Lord." When we really think about it we can celebrate and remember both these but, unless we are able to be thankful to our Father who made all things possible, and able to give thanks to each other then Christ coming into the world was in vain. You can argue that Thanksgiving was about the early pilgrims celebrating with their families and the Indians who helped them... but when you get to underlying purpose, it was to thank God and their friends for helping them survive their early days in America.

Our service to God is based on our faith in Jesus Christ. The reality is that as we practice Thanksgiving we are thanking God for his indescribable gift of Jesus. We received Jesus and we give out of our abundance. As we give to others it is an expression of thanks to God and a way that we profess the gospel of Jesus. It has a circle effect. We thank God by practicing thanksgiving to others. Others are blessed so they thank God and those who have blessed them. And the pattern is set.

As we live our lives daily, we should remember we give thanks to God as we participate in Thanksgiving.

Application:

How often do you give thanks to God?
How often do you demonstrate thanksgiving?
How do you give thanks to God (prayers, worship, or actions) or to others (kindness, thankfulness, charity, cards, calls,)?
Shouldn't we give thanks to God by demonstrating Thanksgiving year round?
Who do you need to offer thanks to God for? They need to hear that voice of thankfulness as well. Can you offer Thanksgiving to them?

Prayer:

Dear Father, help me to show my thankfulness to you by my acts of Thanksgiving. Through my acts may others come to know your love and in turn give thanks to you. May you be glorified in all that I do. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Why Men Hate Going to Church

Much of my reading has been spent on church growth, not just numerical but spiritual. Being a woman, I have often wondered why men, that claim to be Christian, would not pray aloud, take leadership roles, teach mixed classes in the church, or even be remotely interested in anything going on with the church. And... because I am a woman, I could not see through my eyes to reason or begin to understand. As in so many areas of our lives we must look through a different set of lens if we want the picture to clear up. David Murrow's, Why Men Hate Going to Church, became the lens to clear my vision, reality, of just how our churches operate. Never before has the problem in the church been addressed so clearly. We can walk around with our head in the sand but until we address the problem…the problem will never go away it will just worsen.

For years self-help bookshave addressed marital and relationship problems in terms of distinct genderdifferences and have sought to help men and women communicate and relate betterby acknowledging their differences within their marriage. I have not read anybook that has gone where Murrow has trod in such a way as to define the reasonthat men and boys are just not interested in church. He gives advice how tocounteract these differences in communication style in regards to our view ofChrist himself as Lion of Judah vs. Lamb of God, in worship and music styles,to the decoration of the church. He talks about how women and men reactdifferently in their relationships with people.

While I must admit that hepunched women pretty hard for the role that they have taken, his goal was toremind the church and its leaders that we must not just accept each genders wayof expressing their worship, love and devotion to God but to include study,discipleship, and ministry that will fulfill each other’s emotional andspiritual needs so that both gender and all ages can learn worship God.

This book has challenged me to think more about my leadership role in the church in setting an environment so that all may be led to worship. This book is a must for believers (church staff and leaders, wives, and mothers) who want to see men and boys develop a deeper and more satisfying walkwith God. It is a must for those interested in developing the church's delivery system to draw all to a commitment to the ministry that God called all of us toparticipate in. We cannot leave church growth up to “our own” preferences,we must be intentional aboutreaching all people.

There's a Reason

I was going back through my writings and saw this one where I had received this little poem in my e-mail a year or so ago. So here goes just in case someone needed to hear it again.

"There comes a point in your life when you realize:

Who matters,

Who never did,

Who won't anymore...

And who always will..

So, don't worry about people from your past ,

there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.."

Names quickly appear across the pages of my mind as I read this. Yes, there are reasons that people from our past do not make it into our future. We make decisions about people concerning whether we remember or forget them based on whether our relationship with them was/is "good," or "bad."

Have you ever heard someone say, "I will forgive, but not forget?" I believe that forgive means, as though it didn't happen, or in other words, FORGET IT, let it BE GONE. I do forgive individuals, but as hard as I try there are times when that individual, that I thought I left behind, that caused me pain, just pops back up. How about you? Then, once again, I must deal with my feelings.

You know, everytime, yes, everytime I deal with this, the Holy Spirit reminds me of Joseph when he was dealing with his brothers after they had hurt him so deeply. Listen to this passage from Genesis 50:19-21, when Joseph told his brothers, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is not being done, the saving of many lives... and he spoke kindly to them."

I believe that attitude of Joseph is what Christ had in mind when he said for us to "consider it pure joy...when we face trials...."So I am saying I am to fake the hurt during my trials and appear "happy as a Lark," even though I am crushed on the inside? Definitely not. Trials are painful, at least mine are, but I am saying that it is possible to have a positive attitude (joy) because we know that trials produce in us perseverance, patience, and steadfastness (James 1: 2-15).

As believers in God we should try to look at our struggles as an opportunity for growth. As we pray, God will give us strength and wisdom to get through the difficult times and as in the passage today, to not just get past those difficult persons, but be able to look them in the eye and "speak kindly to them." Instead of looking at that individual and saying, "You caused me hurt in my life," look to God and say, "Thank you for using the hurt to accomplish your will in my life."

James 1: 12 says, "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."

How do you see those that hurt you or someone you love. How do you deal with hurt...tough times? Did you become better or bitter? Will you receive the crown?

But God... An Almost Missed Opportunity

Ponder: When was the last time you responded to the urging voice of the Holy Spirit, "But God... ? We all have at one time or another.

Scripture: Acts 9:15-18 " But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name." But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name." So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized

Lesson: Many times we focus on the man Saul, possibly a member of the Sanhedrin court, a high Roman official, in route to Damascus to persecute those who "belonged to the Way" in other words, those followers of Jesus. However God had another plan, a plan that would change his whole life. But I think the lesson for us as followers of Jesus is in Ananias.

When was Saul converted? God put Saul in a position and readied him to receive the Holy Spirit in his life. But, notice, He told Ananias to go to him,"So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. God uses us to reach out to those around us to lead them to our Lord Jesus, to show "them" the way.

Application:
1) What excuses have you given for not responding to the assignments God has called you to do? It may not be too late to respond.
2) Can you imagine the wonderful reward of being the very instrument that God would use to call such a mighty man of God as Saul? Any gain will be so much greater than the loss.

Prayer: Father, as you are passing out assignments for the day, do not pass me by. Give me the courage and strength to respond to your call, facing any danger along the way knowing that it is you that will perform any good word or deed that comes from within us. May I glorify you. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition

I just received this in an email. I am not sure who to give credit to because it was a forward with no credits. It made such good sense that I wanted to pass it on. I. If anyone knows who wrote this... Please comment to me and I will give credit to that person.

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods --
Merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamin's on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about
a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.
Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town
Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.
THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. Post it on your bulletin boards at work and at your local grocery store. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

More Lost Than Found

I just finished reading Jared Herd's book, More Lost Than Found: Finding A Way Back to Faith. At he beginning of the book I found myself thinking, "How simple, nothing that I have not read or thought of before. I am not "lost," I am "found," I just need to finish it so I can get this blog done and get another book on its way." Then about a third through the book I could not lay it down.

I have been a professing Christian for some 50 years now. I have found through reading this book that in some area of my thinking, I too was more lost than found. This is an excellent read for all believers to help us see the trap we fall into. How even though we are living in the 21 century, we are much like the "church" that Jesus came to "save." We need to set back and hear the voices of those who left the church and look at how we really are rather than how we see ourself. If someone outside the church is struggling with their faith then he challenges them to go back to where they started from and encourages them to enter into the Christian faith, to become a part of God's kingdom.

Yes, this is an easy read. No, he does not follow every truth with a scripture footnote but if you know the Bible you will find that the truths in this book are from a man whose thinks is founded in Word of God. This is one or the best books I have ever read to encourage a person in their faith. Herd is not so specific in his hurts that kept him from fellowship with the church yet is open and transparent with his issues. He is real. Through his story I have been challenged to seek more diligently the Kingdom of God.

If I had not already known Jesus, I would have been motivated to get to know Him. If you have drifted from God for whatever reason, get a copy today, and do not lay it down until you finish it. By the way, let me know what you think after you finish.

You must Connect to Communicate

How well do you communicate? It is interesting how we perceive ourselves isn't it?

Having taught elementary school for 30 years, I would have said that I know all about communicating with people. However, upon retiring I found myself interacting with adults and began to question my ability to communicate effectively. Before I had not really given much thought to how connecting with people has a direct relationship to how well we communicate. That is when I choose John Maxwell's, Everyone Communicates Few Connect, as my choice from Thomas Nelson's book list. I read it a couple years ago, and found it to be an outstanding book.

I did not get my review in so I reread the book. I had underlined the things that stood out as I read the book. Now I have read it twice. Mr Maxwell quotes Dan, "People with charisma possess an outward focus instead of an inward one. They pay attention to other people, and they desire to add value to them." Whether you wish to learn to connect on a personal level or with larger audiences Mr. Maxwell has much to offer. Not only do you learn about connecting with others you will also learn about yourself.

Thank you Mr. Maxwell for helping me to think through my connecting skills. And, yes I do think this book has helped me add value to my life. Want to add value to your life, order or pick up a copy today.

Cardboard Box Love

Recently some of you have been enquiring about how I have been spending my time since retirement. This video, produced by Martha O'Bryan Center, is seeking to offer secular assistance to this community. It speaks more than a thousand words. Please do not turn off the music for later it stops, and individuals tell their story. Afterwards, I will tell my story and how we are seeking to give spiritual guidance to the community.

Many of you know Matthew, our son. After graduating, from Vanderbilt University, with his Master’s of Divinity, Matthew found himself sleeping on couches in various friends’ houses and working bi-vocational church staff positions trying to make a living. One house in particular on Shelby Avenue proved to be an eye opening experience that would shape the way he did ministry and thought about God’s Kingdom. Behind his backyard, on Shelby Avenue, is one of the poorest sections of Nashville’s housing, with approximately 12,000 people per square mile. It houses the largest housing unit in the metro Nashville area, Cayce Place, featured in the Martha O’Bryan on Video Clip. God has opened our eyes and touched our hearts and we cannot turn our back on the ministry needs here. Seven months ago, Matthew and Alyson started casting their vision among a small group of individuals, that began to call themselves, East Nashville Community Church, (ENCC). It is at Kirkpatrick Recreation Center that we will plant ENCC to have an intentional time for the community to worship together.

During the past weeks since April, I have had the privilege to work with ENCC to minister in this neighbor"hood." It has been a blessing to work with those who have partnered with us: Casting Crowns, Powerplant 2010, Kirkpatrick Metro Center, Keith Cook: On The Go Ministry, and other individuals to begin connecting with the community/families. We have been able to connect with the community by cleaning classrooms at Martha O’Bryan Center (a local non-profit for at-risk persons), serving and delivering “Meals on Wheels,” by skating and interacting with groups playing basketball at the Kirkpatrick Center, or just sitting at a picnic table passing our icy-pops. We have not only connected but have been able to share the gospel through picnic table ministry, parking lot ministry, as well as just finding a spot to tell a short Bible Story to children, handing out information about East Nashville Community Church, and/or just telling everyone I meet about the ministry going on here.

One time specifically while taking clothes to the Martha O’Bryan center to hand out…I went about my business, chatting to some individuals as we unloaded clothing from the back of our car. I saw the older man sitting against the wall, appearing not to pay us any attention. As we carried in the last box, he said something that still rings through the crevices of my mind, and touches the deepest part of my heart, “Lady if you want to make a difference in our neighborhood, you gotta” walk” our streets.”

I overheard one of the community children ask the student minister, “Will you come and have church on Sunday?” The student minister answered, “No, we have to go home.” They (the children) didn’t say it, but you could read their eyes, “You bring us cardboard boxes filled with token’s of love, but then you leave us. We know all about the kind of love that comes and goes. We want you to stay around so we can feel your arms. We want to experience your love.”

Oh, what good intentions we have when we “drop off” our love in cardboard boxes, hop into our vehicles, and drive away. It is so important to connect with individuals and certainly these are ways to connect. However, connecting is only the beginning of making a difference in someone’s life. An Ethiopian man was reading the book of Isaiah, (or what we would interpret as, the Bible) in Acts 8:31. Phillip asked him, “Do you understand what you are reading?” In other words, can you understand this in a way you can apply it? The Ethiopian answered Phillip’s question saying, “ ‘Well, how can I, unless someone guides me?’ And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.” In essence, this Ethiopian man was hungry for discipleship.

We have seen over 100 come to know Jesus as their Savior. The community wants to know more about Jesus. They want hope. They want to continue to experience love. Matthew has shared with the community that we are coming to worship with them on August 1^st. A mother, with two young daughters, shared that if they went to church they had to ride a bus and her small oxygen tank would not last long the trip. Others shared that they had to catch a ride for there was not a church in walking distance. With enthusiasm and excitement they would say, “August 1st, Now…You will be here, right here, August 1st?” Two men were playing basketball at the courts. One man said, “You see these children, my nieces and nephews; if you bring a church here, I will see to it that they are there.”

We, ENCC, believe that people matter to God. Whether we all agree on specific doctrines, we can agree on that until we unite together to complete the gospel then we waste a lot of time and resources competing with each other. This community has invited us to come and sit awhile, to love them, and we are responding. This is our attempt to "sit" with them, to share with them a genuine love that gives hope, yet makes a difference in all of our lives.

The Costner’s, family, and a few friends have been funding this church plant since it’s beginning. Our heart hurts more and more for the restoration and redemption of this great community, but the needs are greater than what we can accomplish on our own. Please pray that God will speak to you and your family as to how you can support/partner with us. We need 24 individuals that will join us in giving $100.00 per month for a minimum of one year. IS APPROVAL AND PRACTICE THE SAME?

Do you believe that “religion” has its place but is totally disconnected to the way you live your life? Christians may not practice ungodly living but what about their approval of it?

Scripture:

Romans 1:32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them

Some of us were talking just a few days ago how TV, movies, and magazines, ads and commercials have changed through the years. It seems like there is no limit to what is said or done in public anymore. There is no shame. No distinction between good and evil. Sidney J. Harris says, “Once we assuage our conscience by calling something a "necessary evil," it begins to look more and more necessary and less and less evil.”

It is only by God’s standards that we can distinguish right from wrong? My pastor has a saying, “Right is always right, and wrong is always wrong. It is never right to do wrong and, It is never wrong to do right.”

While we may not practice wrong or evil doing, ungodly living, and worldliness, we may be guilty of its approval. Too often we silently approve when we refuse to: speak out against wrong doings, change channels when ungodly language is being used, walk out of an obscene movie, etc.

Jesus said, in the Sermon on the Mount, "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:13-16

Christians cannot be the salt of the earth if they are not different from the world, not for the sake of being different but that other can see the hope within us. We need to look for ways to lead the nation back to Christ rather than condemning them to an eternity in hell.

Application:

1. Are there things that once shocked you that now don’t even raise your eyebrows?

2. What do you find most pleasure in doing? What do you watch and listen to and laugh at for entertainment: music, dvd’s, cd’s, movies that may not be right?

3. We need to pray each day that God will keep our hearts pure and keep us still able to be shocked by sin.

4. How are we conducting our lives so that we are the salt of the earth?

Prayer:

Dear Father, forgive me for the times that I have sat silently and approved of things that I knew were wrong in your sight. Keep my mind clear so that I am able to discern right from wrong. Help me to be a light of the world so that others will come to know you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

WILL GOD GIVE US OUR WAY?

Will God ever just let individuals have their way? What does it mean when we say, “God gave them over?”

Scripture:

Romans 1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Lesson:

First, God loves us and He provided the Word as a standard with which we are to live our lives. Christ is the standard and not the world. He gave us this standard because it would help us live our lives with less problems not so he could punish us when we break them. If we are to please God and live a less complicated life we will choose wisdom from God as communicated in the New Testament. We must always seek answers to the hard questions by asking God’s intent and design for mankind in the situation and circumstances we face.

However, if we persistently choose to go our own rebellious way then God will give us up to our own way. When people turn from God’s truth they turn to their own understanding, their own desires, their own principles. They turn away from the foundational truths that would keep them from getting into trouble. Paul tells us that when God allowed man to go their way they chose a lifestyle that is the opposite of God’s standard: sexual impurity, shameful lust and deprived mind.

Peter’s instructions to those living among the immoral and corrupt was, "...as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ’Be holy, for I am holy.’" I Peter 2:14-16.

Paul says to us, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2.

Application:

1. What warning does Paul give us for seeking Him rather than our own ways?

2. What attitude should we have concerning those who have turned from God’s ways?

3. How holy are you in your walk or have you conformed to the world?

4. What instruction does Paul give us as we live among the corrupt world?

Prayer:

Dear Father, I want to be obedient to you. Renew my mind that I may be good, acceptable and perfect in your will. Help me to be holy in my conduct and not to conform to the world’s way. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

ANY ASHERAH POLES AROUND THE HOUSE?

No, I can say without hesitation that I do not have any Asherah poles anywhere near my house. How about you?

Scripture:

Romans 1: 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Lesson:

I do not have any mahogany Buddha’s, or golden calves either, but before I get to proud of myself I need to consider a Mark Driscoll quote: Idols are good things turned into god things and they become bad things. W.E. Vine says, “Man is essentially constituted a worshipper. If he abandons the worship of God, some other object will be found to take the place of the Creator.”

Paul is telling us that when we turn to foolish thinking: do not worship God, do not acknowledge Him, do not show gratitude to him, do not recognize that he is the source of all good gifts, it leads to darkened minds. Exchanging truth thinking for images and that is idolatry. An idol is anything that absorbs us and takes the place of God and/or our worship.

We are so defined by what we own (cars, clothes, houses, jewelry, money, beauty, careers, position, sports, etc.) Parents wrap themselves up in a lot of things hoping to assign some sort of value to themselves and their children. These things are not idols on their own but can become idols when we view it as defining our value and devote ourselves to getting “it.”

To worship God as God, we will heed God’s message in Exodus 34:12-14, “Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you. Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles. Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. We will acknowledge him as Lord of all creation, including ourselves. We give up our will to his will in our lives. We should only seek our identity, purpose, significance, security, and our value in and through Jesus Christ.

application:

1. What are some evidences of those claiming to be wise, but are foolish?

2. Who or what has moved into your life that takes up more space that your time with God? It might be the object of your worship?

3. What absorbs you, your thinking, your energy? What do you have or seek to have that you think will give you value in life? Where does God/Christ fit in?

4. What do your idols look like? (children, sports, movie stars, food, drugs/alcohol, pleasure, things, houses, etc)

5. What steps are you willing to take to tear down the Asherah poles or anything else so that you can turn your eyes back toward Jesus?

Prayer:

Dear Father, help us be honest with ourselves, and identify those created things we might have a tendency to worship and serve. Help us to put away our idols, to put you in your rightful place as the only one worthy of our worship and service, so that we can worship and serve you first, and foremost. In Christ alone. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

HOW DO YOU HONOR GOD?

What about those who claim to know God but choose to live their lives as they want to? Scripture tells us that all have knowledge of God. Even Satan and his hosts know God. Knowing God does not mean that a person has a personal relationship with God.

Scripture:

Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Lesson:

Paul again uses the word knowledge. Paul points out that all individuals have knowledge of God but they do not worship him as their God? Here Paul points out 4 ways we reject God.  

1. By dishonoring Him- When we fail to glorify God we are dishonoring Him in the worst way. We are told in Revelations 4:11 that, "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

2. By being unthankful- It is so easy to see when individuals are ungrateful when we do something for them but day after day we receive from God but do not show gratitude.

3. By Vain imaginations- Man rejects God when he turns to his own way and his own speculations rather that living by God’s standards. 

4. By allowing their hearts to be darkened- Our hearts are darkened when we exchange truth for falsehoods. Darkness is evil. Darkness brings with it hopelessness, fear, insecurity and lostness. The foolish heart that rejects God and dishonors God brings darkness to the soul. Darkness is the beginning of idolatry.

A few weeks ago our son experienced a flood. A neighbor responded, “He was lucky.” This was an opportunity to glorify and give God credit for sparing his house during the flood. I had to respond, “ No, I do not credit his situation to luck, I call it, “The hand of God, once again showing grace and mercy to his children.” Sometimes out talk does not match our walk. If God is our God we will honor him and give Him credit where credit is due.

Application:

1. How does your life glorify God? (in your walk/talk and eat/drink?

2. When and how often do you give thanks to God for his mighty work in creation and in your life? Does your lifestyle honor God, or do you serve him on Sunday, but Monday –Saturday take a break and “live like the devil?”

3. Do you behave differently around different people? (friends watching a game, dinner with the pastor, slack waitress or waiter at a restaurant, etc.)

4. Do you give answers to questions that glorify God or do you take credit for yourself?

5. Is your interpretation of scriptures for others or do you apply truths to your life? Do you exchange truth for falsehood when it applies to your situations or circumstances?

Prayer:

Dear Father, Thank you for the favor you have shown me throughout my life. You have blessed my family and me in so many ways. Please forgive me for the times that I have taken you for granted. I want to glorify you in all that I say and do. In Jesus name I pray, Amen

IS IGNORANCE AN EXCUSE?

“But I did not see the sign,” was the response Joey made to me as we drove away from the highway patrol that just gave us a ticket.

Scripture:

Romans 1:19 “Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Lesson:

Just because we did not see the speed sign, did not mean the sign was not there, nor did it excuse us from being held accountable for it? The same is true about God. Refusing to acknowledge God does not excuse us from not knowing Him nor can ignorance be claimed as an excuse for not being obedient to Him. We are still responsible to Him as our Creator and Lord?

Recently, driving, across the Smokey Mountains I saw hundreds of miles of mountains, forest, boulders, sky, clouds, and a hard thunder storm. I was reminded of the scripture, “Listen to the roar of his voice, to the rumbling that comes from his mouth…God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.” What evidence do you see that there is God?” Paul contends that all have had God revealed to them even if they are from the most remote area in the world. Everything in the universe bears witness to God and his power.

· He is visible: In other words man has an innate awareness of God.

· He is understood: any wise person who sees the truth will also reflect on it and reach a conclusion about it.

· He is from the beginning to the end: The human race began knowing God through his creations, but has throughout history, rejected Him. From the world around him, man knew that there was a God who had the wisdom to plan and the power to create.

· He has eternal power and divine nature: God reveals his power and nature through the splendor of creation whether man acknowledges the reality or not.

I find it interesting that anyone would claim incompetent to all that God has provided that bears witness to His being and His power. It seems like self-incrimination to me. Would anyone argue there was no wind if they had just observed a tornado twist huge oak trees from their roots, rip houses off their foundations, leaving the land as though a giant machine has mowed it down? Hardly not.

Application:

1. What would be your answer to someone who would deny there is a God?

2. How has God revealed himself to you?

3. Do you find it interesting that anyone would claim incompetent to all that God has provided that bears witness to His being and His power?

Prayer:

Dear Father, You have made yourself visible within us and in all our surroundings, from the air we breath to the birth of a new born infant? Help us to be able to give a ready answer at any given time as to evidence of your existence. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

SOMEBODY IS WATCHING YOU

“Someone is watching you.” This computerized high tech world we live in causes us to believe this may or may not be true.

Scripture:

Romans 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

Lesson:

There is one thing we can be sure of, “There is one who is watching us all the time.” He is omnipresent (all present), omniscient (all knowing), and omnipotent (all powerful), Jehovah, the Almighty God. While we may escape getting caught by our justice system (driving too fast, cheating on taxes, drug misuse, child abuse, porno, etc.) we will not escape Him.

The Gentile world basically saw no problem with sin, believing God would not bother himself with the everyday sins as long as the sins were not excessive. But, God takes sin seriously and he will not tolerate it. God’s wrath is not a feeling or attitude of anger against us it is directed at:

· human ungodliness: sin against God

· human unrighteousness/wickedness: sin against man, and

· human unbelief: choosing not to believe, to suppress or stifle the truth.

God loves us. If you are a follower, Jesus has already taken the wrath for you, but if not, make no mistake, your godlessness and wickedness will receive his wrath.

Application:

1. Do you know that we hide nothing from God?

2. Could we be guilty of sinning against God when we allow others to take his name in vain in our presence, ignoring His will in our lives, not speaking out in His name?

3. Could we be guilty of sin against man when we treat others less than we would want to be treated?

4. Could we be guilty of not believing God’s word is relevant to our lives or by changing God’s word to match our want or need?

5. Do you see evidence where God may have exercised his wrath in our day?

6. Will you be the recipient of God’s wrath or his grace provided by Jesus death and resurrection? (Steps to salvation)

Prayer:

Dear Father, Thank you for your grace and mercy toward me a sinner. Thank you for providing a sacrifice, your Son, Jesus, to take the punishment for my sin. Work within me that I will not sin against you in any way. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:17 ARE YOU RIGHT WITH GOD?

Are you right with God? You say, “Well I want to be.” But how is one made right with God?

Scripture: 

Romans 1:17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Lesson:

I heard someone once say, “Well, she was a “good” woman, you know she went to heaven.” Is that true, is that Biblical? Does being “good” make us right with God? Would being good give us a ticket into heaven?

There is only one way to be saved? By Christ and Christ alone. However, being saved is not a one-time ticket, for salvation is a lifelong process. We are told that he who endures to the end will receive the reward.

It is by accepting and trusting Christ that we are saved. In other words, we are made right with God. Our faith and faith alone justifies us.

· “The just shall live by faith” is a quote from Habakkuk 2:4 and is key doctrine not only for Romans but the Bible as a whole. Romans 10:9-10 “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”

· “The just shall live by faith” To Live means to lead a particular type of existence, experience something, or to continue. It means how we live our lives. In other words our faith influences how we live our lives. We do not just live as we please. We live according to the one within whom our faith resides.

To answer the question, Being good does not make us righteous, but if we are righteous we will be good. When we become a believer, there is evidence of the Holy Spirit living within us. The Fruit of the Spirit produces goodness from within us.

Application:

1. Are you depending on your “goodness” to justify your righteousness before God? Will that be enough?

2. Are you right with God?

3. Do your actions reflect that you are walking by faith and not sight?

4. Are you working on developing an obedient faith?

Prayer:

Dear Father, our righteousness is dependent upon our faith, for our goodness is rubbish in your eyes. Make my faith strong. Live in and through me that I may be pleasing to you. Help me to walk in faith and not by sight only. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:16-17 HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CHURCH?

How did you choose your church? What kind of church do you attend? Does your pastor preach the gospel or is he afraid someone might be offended? Does he move around and pick and choose people pleasing messages or does he bring the Word of God to the people? Are people walking the aisles and making life-changing decisions to live for Jesus?

Scripture:

Romans 1: 16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Lesson:

Joey and I are seeking a church family. We have been visiting several churches now? We have heard many reasons for attending a church but as I read Romans 1:16-17 Paul spoke to me. I believe he says,

A Righteous Church is Bold in Preaching of the Word: Is the Word being preached from the pulpit? While there are many great stories and lessons that can be taught from hearing God’s word, there is nothing as powerful as the gospel of Jesus Christ. Too many pastors are not preaching the word in fear of embarrassing someone or being politically incorrect. The Bible teaches against choosing people pleasing messages rather than preaching the Word, and living by man’s standards rather than Gods.

A Righteous Church believes the Gospel is Power unto Salvation: Churches all over the nation are grabbing anything and everything coming and going, from music, dress, programs, projects, various preaching styles, etc. trying to entice individuals to join their fellowship. Churches are growing, but are individuals being saved? There is only one thing that we should be focusing on as we live church, and that is to share the gospel. The gospel of Jesus is the only power. Paul says the gospel IS the POWER of salvation. It is the gospel of Jesus Christ that accomplished salvation. That means that the gospel is able to deliver men from captivity of sin. It can set us free spiritually.

A Righteous Church Welcomes All: For the gospel is the power unto salvation for “everyone” who believes. Nowhere in the Bible do we find where believers are told to come together to organize churches based on culture, race, gender, social status, likes and/or dislikes. Faith is the one thing that unites believers regardless of their other differences.

A Righteous Church Shares Faith from First to Last: There should be a fellowship among the body in that the young will come to believe as a result of the first, Older, Christian’s testimony. Rather than the attitude of the “old” versus the “young” attitude, there should be a unity among the fellowship where the old is mentoring and encouraging the young, and the young respects and learns from the old.

A Righteous Church Lives by Faith: Believing in the sense of knowing knowledge is true is not enough. Followers of Jesus are called to believe the Word in that it influences the way they live their lives. The gospel (what they believe) is what empowers us to live transformed lives. They live the Word, not by seeing, but by faith. A church/believer who walks by faith will be obedient to God and His Word even when they do not know where the path will lead, even if it seems strange to the world, even if it does not make sense to do it, and even if is seems financially unsound. Faith means putting all trust in what God is able to do and not man's ability. It was once said “a small step for man, but a giant step for mankind.” As kingdom people our faith will lead us to take what is a giant step for man, all because to our Almighty God, it is but a small step. When we think the step is too large for us we need to remember it is a small step for God for he is the creator of the universe and all that is in it.

Application:

1. How did you choose where to attend church? (you were born there, relatives go there, denominational views, politically correct, socially correct, music, biblically sound, you don’t know)

2. Is the Gospel of Jesus preached unashamedly at your church or does the pastor shy away from preaching anything that might be politically incorrect? Does he preach the gospel that leads you to repentance? Are individuals moved to salvation? (Repentance, confession, transformation, and sanctification)

3. Does your church welcome all? Are you sure, or as you look around, do you realize it is just another social club? How diverse is your group? How accepting are you of those who do not look, smell, talk, live, sing, dress, or eat like you? Would you sit on the same pew or take them to lunch with you?

4. How does the church live out its faith, both individually and cooperatively? Do members seek to live by biblical standards or their own? Are you challenged by their faith to be a stronger believer? Have you grown in your faith as a result of their witness and testimony?

5. Is church attendance enough or do you come to church with a sense of anticipation, anticipation that someone will be saved? Are you concerned when no one responds to the message?

6. Does the church as a whole step out in faith so that God is ABLE to show what he can do rather than what you as church are able to do?

7. How much have you grown spiritually since you have been a part of _____ church? Are you helping to mentor other to a higher level of spirituality?

8. Are you satisfied that your church is a righteous church? If not are you bold enough to help it transform into one? Do you need to seek new fellowship so that you can grow into the person God wants you to be?

Prayer:

Dear Father, thank you for churches who are righteous in your eyes. Help me to be a believer who is unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the place that I am willing to speak boldly for you, willing to welcome all who want to seek you in their lives, and willing to walk in faith to the place that my faith may lead others to a faith in you. Give me strength and discernment as I seek to fellowship with righteous people so that I will be strengthened and if I need to change churches then lead me to do so. In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Romans 1:16-17 CAN GOD USE A SILENT WITNESS?

“Many times your witness is sabotaged not by what you do but what you don’t do. If your voice trembles, your hands shake, or you stumble over words, God can use your witness, God cannot, however, use your silence.” Quote by William Fay the author of, Share Jesus Without Fear.

SCripture:

Romans 1: 16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Lesson:

In a recent discussion a group at our Bible Study, we talked about our witness. While everything that we do should be done in love we should not confuse the sharing of the gospel with love. According to Paul, we speak the gospel but we demonstrate it through love. Paul goes to great lengths to explain the importance of our witness and testimony. He is not alone. Read aloud what others say. We cannot remain silent and if we do there are consequences.

Luke 9:26-27. "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels  

Mark 8:38 "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." 

What is the difference in speaking the gospel and demonstrating the gospel? We speak the gospel but we demonstrate it through love. There are times we can share gospel of Christ in silent ways such as the Gideons /sharing Bibles, tracts, songs, music, wearing our symbolic jewelry or clothing, books and etc. However, we must be so careful in that it is so easy to hide behind these things and thus justify our reasons or excuses for not being verbal with out witness.

The key word in the gospel is Jesus. I used to get around the talk by saying, “Where do you go to church?” or “Have you been baptized?” A great percentage are or have been members of a church and baptized. However, and while those questions may be good ways to open the door, they are avoiding a most important question? So, the next most important question we must get to is, “How is your relationship to God/Jesus? Is your relationship to God/Jesus where you want it to be? This is a direct question and most will pause and either look me in the eye or at the floor and say, “No, I am not where I need to be.” And, then that opens the door with, “You can be.”

We must bring people to Jesus. Perhaps by examining how and why Paul was not ashamed of the gospel, we might be more diligent in our efforts to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Application:

1. Consider ways you can share the gospel without speaking.

2. Consider ways you can share using words of others, just not your words. (music, magazines, tracts, books, videos, etc.)

3. Consider your approach to sharing the gospel by telling them of your experience with Jesus.

4. Do you publically proclaim (by words and actions) that you have made a commitment to Jesus?

5. When was the last time you actually shared the gospel with someone?

ROMANS 1:16-17 HOW DO YOU REACT TO THE GOSPEL?

Are you able to say with Paul, I am not ashamed of the gospel? I want to be able to make this claim as Paul did but many times I am more like Peter when he denied Christ 3 times and the shame he felt when he heard the cock crow.

Scripture:

Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Philippians 3:8. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ.

Lesson:

“I am not ashamed of the gospel,” is probably one of Paul’s most famous sayings. Why was it necessary for Paul to inject this statement into this message? Obviously there were some who were ashamed to acknowledge their belief and faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ. There were those who just thought that the message of Jesus was just too simple. Remember, there were those who thought that Jesus would come as a king on a white horse, as a warrior, to lead his people in a revolt. Some actually thought he would come off the cross and defeat Rome. It appeared that the kingly leader was defeated. They did not believe that Christ arose, or that there was life after death.

We are attuned to the world and the world is really intolerant to Christianity, even hostile at times. Many individuals do not like change and the gospel of Jesus challenged the religious sect to make some changes in the way they worshipped and in the way they lived their lives. Paul was not ashamed of the gospel and he challenges us to speak boldly in personal evangelism. This means to me that we all have an obligation to share the gospel.

Application:

1. Why do we shy away from proclaiming the gospel?

2. How many people do you know that are active in personal evangelism?

3. How comfortable are you in sharing the gospel with others? Would you like to be more comfortable?

4. Do you believe the gospel is good news, then why would you hesitate to share it?

5. What reasons do you shy away are not active in personal evangelism?

Prayer:

Dear Father, thank you for loving me enough to die for me. Help me to be strong and bold in testifying for you when you open doors of opportunity to witness. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:14 ARE WE OBLIGATED TO THE GOSPEL?

I am bashful. I am an inrovert. I do not like to talk. Are we excused from sharing the gospel? How obligated are we to sharing the gospel?

Scripture:

Romans 1:14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome

Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inthe name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Lesson:

Paul saying that we as recipients of the gospel are obligated to share the message of Christ. When we receive the gospel we actually incur a debt. We are not ours anymore…we become Christ. He initially paid our debt. If someone pays our debt do we just say thank you and then act as thou we have no relationship to that person? No, generally we work on paying back what we owe. While we cannot die for our own sins, we are indebted to Christ who paid for our sins.

It is not a matter of have to but we should want to give back to the one who paid the highest price for our atonement. Since Christ died for our sins, we are obligated to Christ. He explicitly tell us what he want us to do. Paul say, what do you want me to do? When we ask the question, he tell us what to do. Matthew 28 sums up what God wants us to do. We are to share Jesus with all we come in contact with as we go our way through the world.

When we receive the gospel it imposes upon us a debt. We repay our debt by passing the gospel to someone else.

Application:

1. How obligated do you feel toward sharing the gospel?

2. Do we all have to share the gospel the same way? How is your unique way of sharing the gospel?

3. Are there boundaries (social, racial, cultural, economical, educational, political) that you must break so that you can reach the lost?

4. Do we have the love we need to call all brothers in Christ?

5. How do we generally define our church families?

6. How are we inclusive or exclusive when we come to culture, race, social, or economic differences?

7. What problems does the church face today as the church tries to live out the truth of this text?

Prayer:

Dear Father, create in me a desire to reach the lost. Help me to see the unique way that you have planned for me in witnessing for you and in sharing my testimony. The boundaries that are within me that prevent me from speaking boldly for you that others may come to know you. Help me to lead my church to accepting and loving all that come to know you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:13-15 WHY WE NEED A BROTHERHOOD?

Even the hardest of individuals understand brotherhood, whether it is the natural brother or a brotherhood by association. We as believers talk about our brothers and sisters in Christ. What does that imply? Who is your brother and sister in Christ?

Scripture:

Romans 1:13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. 14I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome

Lesson:

As we are still in the first chapter of Romans, but I just keep hearing how strong Paul feels about our relationship not only with God the Father but, among us as believers. Here he calls a group of individuals that he has never met, brothers. How can that be? Brother carries with it a connotation of affection one to another. So how do we have that relationship with one that we do not personally know or to someone we have never met?

As believers we have a brother/sister relationship because of our relationship to the heavenly father and not because we agree with, look alike, or act alike. As believers we are members of the family of God, therefore all differences should be forsaken. Why? Not for the sake of brotherhood but for the sake of the gospel of Christ. While brotherhood is so important, the result is that a harvest is among us when the gospel is preached. There is a direct relation between a harvest and the condition of the body of Christ. If the body (church) is not healthy, it cannot reproduce.

Application:

1. Who is your brother/sister in Christ? How do you relate to them?

2. Is your attitude to other brothers and sisters in Christ so that you are willing to do whatever you need to do for a harvest to take place in the kingdom?

3. Are there things (hurt feelings, envy, jealously, unforgiveness, pride, etc.) that keep you from relating to your brothers and sisters in Christ that you need to get rid of? Name it and get rid of it now.

4. What does harvest imply? When we plant a seed what do we expect?

5. How eager are you to carry the gospel to others or are you caught up in the things that would bring disharmony among you and other believers?

Prayer:

Dear Father, help me to love your children the way a father wants his children to love each other. Forgive me and remove from me any unloving attitudes or feeling that are not of you. Lead me in such relationships that would lead others to know you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:8-12 HOW IS YOUR CHURCH GROWING?

Is your church growing? I have spent the last 10 years observing and analyzing church growth. I find it quite interesting that rather than growing, birthing new Christians, churches have become satisfied with just more or less swapping members.

Scripture:

Romans 1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world 9 God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you. 11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith.

Lesson:

Many books have been written concerning church growth. Writers give many solutions to church growth but Paul give two solutions that are very crucial to church growth: prayer and fellowship that encourages each other’s faith.

First Paul mentions his praying for the church. So many times we exhaust every avenue to solve problems and when all else fails we decide to pray. Scripture tells us to seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added. Many churches have given up their mid-week prayer services and replaced it with many other “good” things but nothing can take the place of prayer. I once heard the saying, “A family that prays together, stays together.” I believe with Paul, a church that prays together grows in faith together.

Secondly, Paul talks about togetherness, fellowship. As the spiritual leader, he says he will bring them spiritually what they need to help them understand the good news of Jesus. In return they were to be an encourager to him. Many take fellowship to mean church “pot-luck” dinners. While this could be a good avenue for some good fellowship, it is only that. The church should be encouraged by each other’s faith. A Church whose behavior is influenced by grudges, hurt feelings, different opinions, and unforgiveness, cannot encourage anyone.

When a church puts prayer and true fellowship up front then individuals will begin to testify to the changes that will take place within the body of believers. As a result, others will come from far and wide to see and be a part of such fellowship.

Application:

1) What place does prayer have in your life/church? Is it a vital part or just a side-kick?

2) How should the role of spiritual leader/learner compliment and support each other?

3) Where do you fit in? Are you an encourager or critic?

4) Do you take care of your spiritual leaders needs as carefully as you do the needs of other members?

5) What would church look like if we focus more on prayer and fellowship (encouraging each other’s faith) than activities and programs?

6) Consider ways to grow as a prayer warrior and as an encourager.

Prayer:

Dear Father, create in me a heart that desires you. Help me to so focus on you that my prayers do not cease. Teach me to pray for fellow believers, for the church, and its growth. Help me to be an encourager to all. And, father, place in my life individuals to encourage me, to keep me accountable in my Christian journey. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans1:8 WHAT ARE YOU KNOWN FOR?

What are you known for? What will be written in your obituary when your accolades are written? I have always introduced myself as Irvin and Waynett’s daughter, Joey’s wife, Matthew’s mother, Teacher for Cleveland County Schools, resident of Twin Lake Drive, member of given church, writer of IWANNABE…like Jesus blog, gardener, and on and on.

Scripture:

Romans 1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world... 

Lesson:

Paul was known for his letters to the churches as well as to his friends and fellow believers commending them on their faith. He went on to say in this letter that their faith was being reported all over the world.

I will have to say that I have attended several churches during my life and never have I known of any of them receiving a letter from past staff in the form of praise or challenging them to kingdom work. Then again, I have never sent any letters either. This portion of the letter has challenged me to think of those that have followed me, and to think of ways that I could encourage them.

The second thing that I find so interesting is that their faith was being reported all over the world. Keep in mind they did not have TV, radio, phones, email, Internet, and all the other media devices of our day. We have all the means to evangelize the world and yet we fail to take advantage of the opportunity to do so.

Yes, I can do a lot of things, but it is only through Christ who strengthens me. I pray that the only way one sees me is to see Christ first.

Application:

1) How faithful are you? In other words, is your faith evident in your walk with Christ or for other areas of your life (sports, community service, politics, craftiness, arts, success, etc)?

2) How faithful is your church? Are people coming far and wide to see what is happening at your church? Is it known for it’s reputation to holding true to God’s Word or for its music program, youth/children’s activities, political status, facility, bake sales, meals, etc.

3) When was the last time you thanked someone and/or a church for their spiritual influence in your life? Remember them in your prayer and… and then write them a note of thanks.

Prayer:

Dear Father, I thank you for _________________ because their faith is spoken and seen everywhere they go. They have been a bold witness and have been instrumental in my spiritual growth. Work in my life that I may lead others to you. Work within my church that we will be known throughout our town and community as being faithful to you, in Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:7 ARE YOU A SAINT?

Who do you consider a Saint, Mother Theresa or Saint Mary, yourself? I have heard such responses as, “ I am not a Saint but…” By true definition, you might be a “saint.”

Scripture:

ROMANS 1:7 ...To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Lesson:

When asked the question, “Do you consider yourself a Saint,” individuals without any hesitation will emphatically resound, “NO.” Wonder why? Why would a Christian not want to be characterized as a Saint?

Most individuals think of a Saint as one who has either earned the title or had it bestowed to them from something they have done. However, Paul gives different guidelines as to who qualifies for the title. According to him, a person is a saint by accepting Christ as their Savior and by exalting Him not themselves.

So… by this definition, it may be a little easier to accept the title of “saint.” For it is not through our own character, or our own doing but by and through our relationship with Jesus Christ. By this definition, I will accept the title.

Application:

1. Does your behavior characterize you as a saint?

2. Does God love you? Have you heard God’s call and responded in obedience? By Paul’s guidelines this designates you as a Saint.

3. Could the reason one would not be comfortable being called a Saint is because they are not exalting God by their actions.

Prayer:

Dear Father, I want to exalt you in all that I do. Help me to be proud of any title that I might possess that would help me to glorify you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Hearing God's Voice

Can you really hear God's voice? I can and do. So often I hear someone say, How do we know it is God's voice?

Scripture:

Romans 1:6 “And you also are among those who are called…”

John 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

Lesson:
I have mitral valve prolapse. When I get all wrapped up in life and allow circumstances, situations, worry and fatigue to get the best of me it affects the normal work of my mitral valve. When this happens, I suffer symptoms: severe tightness of chest, weakness, pain in jaw and teeth, etc. My cardiologist prescribed a beta blocker to slow down my pace to prevent me from "over doing it."

However, I prefer preventive medicine over prescribed medications. So....Early on I decided to listen to the voice of my body. By doing this I am able to control the things that trigger the symptoms related to this problem, therefore, I do not have to take the medications. Just as we learn to listen to our body we can learn to recognize the voice of God.

God speaks to us:

Through the written Word, (Bible).
Through the Holy Spirit living within us.
Through other individuals under the influence of the Holy Spirit. (words, music, testimony, witness, etc.)
Through experiences and circumstances.
Through His creation creations.

Application:

How does God speak to you?
Are you able to discern God's voice from other voices? How?
As we learn to hear Gods voice we should ask for discernment. I have met individuals that seemed to say that God told them things that appeared to be self-promoting.
When discerning God will, always know that it will not contradict His Word.

Prayer:

Dear Father, teach me to hear your voice. Make my senses sensitive to you that I may be so in-touch with you that I not only hear you in every way but am obedient to your call. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Is That You, God?

Do you hear God’s voice? Some have said to me that God does not speak to individuals. I choose to disagree. God speaks to me all the time.

Scripture:

Romans 1:6 “And you also are among those who are called…”

John 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

Lesson:

Who are the called? Scripture tells us that God is not willing that any should perish. (John 3:16) , therefore we know he is calling out to us. We are told in Job that God even calls out in the thunder and lightning. It was through His son that God made a way for all to experience everlasting life. He calls to us just as he called to Saul on the road to Damascus. It's simple, He calls, and You either answer or ignore Him? Saul heard the call and then he answered, “What do you want me to do?”

Not so long ago I had been trimming the shrubs and low tree limbs in my yard. I stopped to adjust my ratchet cutter and when I could not see the detail of the ratchet, I realized I had lost my glasses. Yes, I had prayed that God would show them for me. After two days of looking, I went outside to look just once more time before the city maintenance picked up the limbs. As quick as I prayed, and I talk to God like I talk to you, “Lord, you know exactly where those glasses are, and I have been obedient in every way I know, to follow you,” I actually heard a belly roll chuckle, and then a voice say, “You must be kidding. When you came out the door to do your trimming I told you to take those glasses off and put on your safety glasses.” I believe that I momentarily stopped breathing for a moment. I said, “God you are so right. I heard that, but I did not know it was you.” A sickness, went through me and I though, "Why did I not know your voice?" My moment of truth followed, as He said, “If I am in you and you in me you will only hear my voice.”

How true. I taught kindergarten for 15 years and everyday we would go outside. I taught my students to listen for my voice so that I would not have to chase them down by yelling or screaming. At the end of playtime I could just raise my hand and in a loud but not screaming or yelling voice, say, “Mrs. Costner’s class come in.” You know, they would line up at the door and not once did students from the other classes line up to come in with me. Why? Sheep hear their master’s voice and are obedient to his call.

I cried to my God, and asked forgiveness for not recognizing his voice. Now I am learning to hear his voice.

Application

We listen to too many voices. The world yells for us to follow it's way. We must learn to turn our ear His way we will only hear His voice.

Prayer:
Dear Father, open my ears to you only. Make me deaf to the voices of the world that might lead me astray. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

FAITH IS ABOUT GOD not OUR OWN STRENGTH

Has life been a bed of roses? Have you ever felt like Job? You are trying to walk the Christian walk and it seems like you are drowning in the world of circumstances while everyone else is floating around on wealth, health, and happiness, offering you no words or arms of encouragement?

Scripture:

Romans 1:5 Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.

Lesson:

The more I talk with people I find that life is no “happily ever after” situation. If you are alive and living, life gets hard, inspite of the prosperity messages, that if you are a Christian you will experience all the good things that life offers. I have given my life seeking God and yet I do feel like Job at times. Not only do I question my own faith, or lack of faith but I wrestle with God at times. I must say that He always wins, and I wind up learning a little more about him. I must say that situations and circumstances have always kept us looking to God for answers. Twice God brought my husband through two serious operations, an acoustic aroma, and triple bypass surgery. Then more recently, like last week, I was concerned with how God was going to orchestrate in my son and daughter-n-law’s lives as the Nashville flood "seemed" to be coming in all around them. When I pray, it is easy to ask God to respond as we see and want things to turn our, but harder as we pray, “God please protect them as you orchestrate your will in their lives.” It is so hard to actually release ourselves and those we love to His will and purpose.

That is where faith comes in. God is still working in my family to teach me that, faith is not trusting God to answer as I want Him to, but trusting Him to orchestrate His will in our lives regardless of the outcome. You know the sad thing is that during my hard times, were only been two individuals that took me to the scriptures and reminded me of this truth. As, I reflect, I thank God for Matthew and Mary who took me back and reminded me of the Creator, and Prince of Peace.

I thank God for voices of encouragement during hard times. We must learn to place our faith in the God who is faithful. We have been talking about our belief system. I am so glad that my faith resides on the strength and power of God Almighty and not within my own strength.

Application:

In whom does your faith reside?
We have no strength within ourselves, but God is all powerful. Then why do we find it so difficult to surrender ourselves into his care?
Faith cannot be a verbal belief, just saying that you are Christian. Does your life reflect a trust in Jesus, and if so what are some evidences of your obedience to faith?
Our faith encourages other people and they will draw strength and encouragement from it. How do you encourage and strengthen other people?
How often do you pray for others in the church, missionaries, friends, or neighbors? Do you feel an obligation to reach all people with the gospel?

Prayer:

Dear Father, Thank you so much that can rest my faith in you. Help me to demonstrate my faith in you that others may draw strength and encouragement from it. Thank you, for those individuals that you have brought into my life that have encouraged me through the years. Bless them for their obedience. Fill me with a desire to reach all people for your kingdom. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

What does obedient faith look like? We do a lot of things in the name of religion, but what about according to the gospel? Are we obedient to what God calls us to do? Does our faith make a difference in how we live our lives? In other words how does what we do align with God's purpose for us? How "love"ly are you today?

Scripture:
Romans 1:5 Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.

Lesson:
As followers of Christ we receive grace as a gift but with that grace comes the responsibility to go out and share the gospel. Paul is going to great lengths in this introductory chapter of Romans to make sure that we understand that the Gospel is universal and that as a follower of Christ, we have been sent forth by God on a mission, to bring about obedience of Faith. To know the fact of the gospel is not enough. Paul is saying here that we must have a faith that leads to obedience.We are to be about God's business of sharing the gospel for Christ's sake. In other words, our purpose is to be about glorifying God. As we think about obedience, one might wonder just why Paul would talk about obedience. But what kind of faith would one have if it did not result in obedience. As a kindergarten teacher I know the significance of teaching obedience, for obedience is the starting point of discipleship. As believers we start our walk with Christ beginning with obedience of our faith just as Christ began his ministry in obedience to the Father.

With this said, Paul will continually see a thread throughout Romans that says that the gospel is about Christ, according to the scriptures, for all people, unto the obedience of faith and to glorify God.

Application:
   As believers, we have received grace and apostleship (a mission to go forth and spread the gospel). What are you going to do about this calling?
   Who is the object of your faith? The church, you, your cause, Christ?
   What are some evidences or your obedience of faith? Does your faith encourage others to obedience?
   How often do you encourage others by praying or meeting their needs?
   Do you feel an obligation to reach all people? What evidence is there that you do?
   As you walk in obedience, how freely does love flow from your actions, or do you act and react out of necessity or the "have to" attitude?
Prayer:
Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy in providing a way of salvation for all who will believe. Open doors of opportunity that I may go forward and spread the gospel. Help me to be open to all people and to extend your love to them. Help me to be an encourager. Forgive me of the time when I have not been obedient and even unpleasing to you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Bible Study Break: Prayer Request. My son's friend, Danny Tomlinson, was lost during the Nashville Flood. Another friend of his posted this story in honor of him. Please pray for his family as they continue to search for his body.

Everybody at the gym knows Danny. Even if you aren’t his friend, you can’t help but know and love the guy with “Jesus tattooed on his back.” That’s how a lot of people refer to him, the “Jesus tattoo” guy. People constantly ask Danny to lift up his shirt so they can see his ink. The above picture doesn’t do “Jesus” justice. The tat’s detail is quite remarkable.

Over the last eight years, Danny and I have talked a lot. One of our first conversations was about his tattoo. And interestingly enough, the last conversation we had, four days before I left for the DR, was about his tattoo. A week or so prior to us talking, Danny had competed in an ultimate fighting match. He lost the fight, and in some ways he lost on purpose. A few minutes into the first round, Danny had his 25-year-old competitor in a hold, a hold that he thinks could have secured the win.

“I could have broken the boy’s arm, but I didn’t want to win that bad. I didn’t need to win that fight.”

I laughed. “Danny, have you ever thought that you might be too nice to be an ultimate fighter?”

“Or too old,” he said.

“Maybe. But I think you’re too kind. You can’t be a winning ultimate fighter and care about your competitor’s arm.”

“Yeah, I reckon you’re right.”

“Danny, you have Jesus inked on your back. People with 21-inch Jesuses on their back don’t purposefully break people’s arms unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

Danny grinned. “Crazy thing about it, I wasn’t even a Christian when I got that tattoo. I would have easily broken that kid’s arm back then. I got the tattoo because I thought it was badass.”

Both of us laughed.

The truth is, Danny is pretty badass. He’s one of the strongest people I know. But Danny also has a very gentle spirit about him. He and I talk often about faith and hope. Danny’s theology is a simple one, one that he often quotes, “I reckon the Good Lord will take care of me. He always has.”

What difference does it make if we believe that Christ was both human and divine?

Scripture:

Romans 1: 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord

Lesson:

The gospel was the same for the Old Testament as well as the New Testament, just as it is for today. It is news of Jesus Christ coming as the messiah of the world. Paul wanted to clarify that he was called to the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus. Jesus the one whose nature was both human and divine. There were groups of individual that believed that Jesus was never flesh and only Spirit so John also went to lengths to emphasis his humanity. Also ancient historians such as Pliny the Younger, Josephus, and Tacitus talked about Jesus verifying that he was not just a Biblical figure. Then there are those as Dan Brown of today who went to great lengths to prove Jesus was only human and not divine in his writing of the Da Vinci Code.

When speaking of Jesus heavenly genealogy, he declares that Jesus is the son of God, evidenced by his death and resurrection. It is important here to know that the death and resurrection was not divine but that it is the most conclusive evidence of his divine nature and victory over death.

With these two verses Paul sum's up Christ's whole nature from his prophesy, birth, death, resurrection, to this reign on the throne.

I like the conclusion that C. S. Lewis, the author The Chronicles of Narnia, makes concerning Jesus. He says we should not say, "I am ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God." He continues, "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic, on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg, or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon, or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to."

JESUS IS MY SAVIOR AND LORD OF MY LIFE

Application:

What do you believe about Jesus?
Knowing that Jesus was human helps up to know that he can relate to us in the human sense. Reflect on the times in your life that it helped you to know that Jesus understood your needs because he had experienced life as a human.
Knowing that Jesus was divine helps up to know that he is able to speak to God on our behalf, and that he has supernatural powers, and that he conquered Satan. Reflect on the times in your life that it helped you to know that Jesus had the power to work in your life when your human nature was not enough?
If we as Christians believe that Jesus was both human and divine, that he is the greatest resource we have, they why do we call upon and deplete all our other resources before we will go to Jesus?

How many professing Christians do you know? How many of them really live their lives any different than non-Christians when it comes to their personal lives? Do they live their lives in such a way that they would cause you to stop and take notice of Jesus?

SCRIPTURE:
Romans 1:1. Paul, ….. set apart for the gospel of God—

LESSON: Over the past years I have been studying Christianity. Individuals attend church as children, are made to come to church as adolescents, then rebel and finally leave the church by the time they go away to college, or move out to their own place. They do not return until ten sometimes fifteen years later if they return then. There are many reasons that individuals give for not being interested in Christianity, and the one I have heard most often is, "I do not see anything in their lives that is any different from mine."

My son shared a book with me, unchristian, by David Kinnaman. Kinnaman is president of The Barna Group, a research group dedicated to studying Christianity in our culture. He along with Gabe Lyons, began this research to find out how just how our culture reflects Christianity. According to the Study, Christians do all those things to give them an appearance of being Christian but in reality when it comes to making a difference in how they live their lives there is very little connection. In other words, they are seen as unchristian.

I first thought that the writers were getting ready to "burn" the church and hang the Christians. This was far from their intention. There is one thread of truth that runs throughout the book and that is that if we are to relate to the world then we as Christians must change how we relate to others. How we perceive ourselves is not near as important to kingdom growth as how non believers see us. others see us. If others cannot see Christ in us then we are not really Christian. If you are interested in leading your church to grow Christians that are living relevant lives, If you are serious about how you may be perceived by the world, then you must read unchristian. They discuss issues that are relevant to understanding why the negative perceptions exist and ways to reverse behaviors so that Christians can positively contribute to the kingdom of God. I asked myself, "Is there anything about me that reflects Jesus enough to cause a person to stop and think about Jesus?" One of my favorite quotes sums up the relationship between Christ and a believer, " A woman's heart should be hidden in Christ that a man must seek Him first to find her....Then they would know we are not only Christian by mouth but also by our actions.

APPLICATION:

If you were on trial for being a “Christian,” would you be convicted?
Think about your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, etc. What would they say about your "Christianity?
What changes do you need to make in your life so that you would make Jesus attractive to the world?

Romans 1:1 SET APART FROM OR APART TO?

We spend most of our lives trying to be like others. We want to fit in, to be apart of the group, to be included. We do not really want to be set apart do we? If we did not care we would not spent billions of dollars a year to make sure we are looking like the "Jones."

Scripture:

Romans 1:1. Paul, ….. set apart for the gospel of God—

Lesson:

We most often think of being separated "from" something. We separate the sick from the well, bad fruit from the good, the criminals from law abiding citizens, etc. We we think about being separated from "the" group, is not a "good" feeling is it? We want to be picked don't we. We want to be invited don't we?

Paul says in this scripture that we are not set apart "from" but "to" or "for" something. Now that is better isn't it. We do like being chosen for something. Paul tells us that Christians are separated for the gospel of God. To be separated to something is like a husband/bride relationship. No longer do these two living their lives in singleness but as one. Everything comes to the marriage based on what is good for the marriage. A husband/bride is separated unto each other for the fulfillment of the marriage contract.

Paul said, I am a servant, I am sent out, and everything I do is for the gospel of God. As a Christian, we will be different for we are set apart to be different and for the purpose of spreading the Gospel of God." Some individuals spend their lives wanting to be "chosen." So we go about doing a little of everything to try to find our place so that we do not look different from others. However, when we know who we belong to and that we are on God's team we can be set apart, different. God has a team that surpasses any other team that we could be a part of called the "kingdom" team, or the "church." Christ thinks we are so special he calls us his "bride." We are set apart unto Him. Let us live as one set apart for Him.

Application:

Do you recognize how special you are to God and his son, Jesus?
Did you realize that in accepting Jesus, not only are you accepting him as Savior but Lord of your life? You are marrying Jesus. You are His now, not the worlds and he has set you apart?
Are you living a life of purity for your husband, Christ, or do you slip into adultery and live like the world when you think no one knows?
What changes do you need to make in your life so that you would make Jesus attractive to the world?
Do you live for Jesus on Sunday but for the devil through the week?

Prayer:

Dear Father, search me and know my heart. Give me your eyes that I may see myself as you and the world sees me. Help me to be true to you to stop trying to hold on to the world and to you. Help me to have an intimate relationship with you so that as the world looks on they will know that I am yours and yours alone. In Jesus name, I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:1 WHO Is CALLED?

When I say, ________ is a called man/woman, what comes to your mind? Do you know someone you consider “called?” What do you mean when you hear someone was called? We hear it all the time, the church called so-n-so to do such-and- such. Is this way of thinking Biblically sound?

Scripture:

Romans 1:1. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle

Lesson:

As a minister (I have given my life in ministry to kingdom work) individuals will come to me and say….you need to say or do this…. Because they sense a person is called they feel that that person should be doing such-and-such. It is interesting to me of all the duties and responsibilities of the one "called" designated by those that do not perceive themselves to be "called." Who is the called in your book? Are you Called?

When God came to Saul, Saul responded, “What do you want me to do?” Saul obeyed God. Do you think God calls us as believers to certain task?When God comes to us, we are to ask the same question, "What do you want me to do?" He calls out to all of us and we respond as Paul or we ignore the calling. He calls and appoints us to different roles and missions. But keep in mind that God created and designed us for the thing he purposed us to do. He calls and appoints us. The church or people of God are not the the ones who call and the ones called are not under their authority. They are only affirming the call on that person’s life.

Application:

1. Have you considered the fact that you are “called.” ?With this new understanding of called, are you called?

2. Apostle means, one who is sent out. Think about the opportunities you have everyday to speak Jesus to someone. Name some of the opportunities you have.

3. Would you live your life the same if you wore the title, Missionary Mary, Pastor Patty, Deacon Diane, Chaplain Christy,etc.? Do we need a title to hide behind to be about God's work?

4. What are we as Christians called to? God is speaking to you now, what is he calling you to do?

5. If we would look at the encounters we have each day with individuals as opportunities to witness, how would Christianity be impacted?

Prayer:

Dear Father, help me to realize the potential I have everyday to speak of your greatness and to the difference Christ has made in my life. Open my eyes and ears to the needs of individuals. Help me to be bold in sharing your love. Again, Father, show me what you would have me do and give me the courage and strength to be obedient to your calling in my life. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:1 IF YOU WERE FREE TO GO….WOULD YOU

Did you see the Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood movie, The Bridges of Madison County, this past week? There are many times we have the opportunity to walk out the door? We do not why?

Scripture:

Romans 1:1. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus

Lesson:

That movie elicits many emotions doesn’t it? It appeared that she was a servant in the family, and taken for granted by her husband. Why did she not leave her husband and daughter? As I thought about this scripture, this movie came to my mind.

After his conversion, Paul calls himself a servant of Jesus Christ. When we think about servant, we think about being someone’s slave, the person who is to do all the menial jobs that a master would not want to do. The Greek word for servant is bond-servant. A huge percentage of the Roman world was enslaved. A servant was one who had no control of their life; they were at the mercy of their master. They were totally dependent on their master for everything. However, there was a time that the servants were freed.

Sometimes the servant, even though freed, would choose to stay with the master. Paul is saying that he has given himself up to Jesus in this manner. God so loved us that he sent His son to die for us. As His children we have everything we need supplied for us. As Christians we are not bound to God out of a master/slave relationship but with the idea that we freely choose to be in relationship with God because of His love and care for us. I am not sure why Meryl stayed with her husband and child for it was obvious she felt bound to them but there was no love shown.

Not because of who we are, but because of who Christ was and is, we should want to give all we have to him in service. A slave submits with an attitude of responsibility to fulfilling a task and no more and cannot wait till the day when they can be set free. When our attitude is that of a bond-servant we submit out of love and we want that relationship to last for eternity.

Application:

1. How do you react to the word servant, better yet the word submission?

2. Do you see your relationship to God as master/servant or as a bond-servant? In other words is your relationship driven our of responsibility or out of ove?

3. How submissive are you to the will of God in your life?

4. Do you ignore God at your leisure? Are you willing to be used? Paul was free to go. We are free to go. God want us in a love relationship not a have to relationship.

Prayer:

Dear Father, thank you for loving me enough to allow your son, Jesus, to die for me. You grace and mercy far outreaches anything that I might deserve. Forgive me for the times that I have been ungrateful to you. I love you and I want to submit my mind, body, and spirit to you. In Jesus name, Amen.

Acts 9: 3-6 GET RID OF YOUR JUNK

Have you had an experience that you would say, changed your whole life, or at least how you perceive life? I have, (almost drowning, a vision, experiencing child’s birth, etc.) Saul had a life changing experience that changed his life. It so changed his life that he got rid of his junk and started life with a new beginning.

Scripture:

Acts 9: 3-6 “3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” 5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” 6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” 5. Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

Lesson:

What kind of experience constitutes a life changing experience? For me it is those life-defining moments, when God gets our attention? When things are going so good, we are on the mountain top, we look at life and just think of how WE have made it, (by our smarts, good looks, wit, who we know, etc.) Often time we fail to recognize God or give Him the credit. However, we begin to see things a little different when crises smack us in the face (divorce, health problems, financial ruin, dying church, etc.)

God uses those experiences to get our attention. It is harder to look up when we're at the top of a mountain, (our eyes look across into the horizon or through the valley) but, when we are in the valley you can only look up. There is something about being in the pit, it is so much easier to recognize who God is and to cry out to God. It was not until Saul became blind did it occur to him to ask, “What do you want me to do?”

When we are wrong, I mean dead wrong, how easy is it for us to recognize it? Not easy for we think we are right. It is even harder to admit it. But when we come into the presence of God we see truth, for God is truth. We are able to not only experience God we will see our true selves (our rights and wrongs.) We see the need for God in our lives.

But hear this....When he encountered God, the experience with God changed his life. It was like he was born into a new life. That is why Christians call it, born in Christ God called Saul out of his past and gave him this new beginning. Did you hear that, his past was past? He began, a new man? You know, God did not tell him to clean up all the mistakes of the past. He just told him to walk in a different direction. When Paul said, What do you want me to do? God said, Do what I tell you to do.

It does not matter what you did a minute ago or 5 years ago. Some individuals have a hard time putting all their junk in the trash can. Put it there and begin this new relationship now. Our lives in Christ is about the present and future, not the Past.

Application:

1. 1. Have you experience some life defining moments in your life?

2. Could God be asking you, “Why have you been playing “religious” when you can have a true relationship with me?

3. Are you satisfied with the relationship you have with God? Are the things you are doing bringing satisfaction?

4. Has the relationship you have with Jesus changed your life?

5. Are you so focus on righting your past that you fail to focus on the present?

6. Are you willing to live in the present by saying, “Lord, What would you have me do?” It will change your life.

Prayer:

Dear Father, I have been living for myself and trying to adhere to all the rules, of being a “good” Christian. The truth is, I can never do enough to justify myself in your sight. I have sinned, and I accept Jesus as my redeemer. Help me to accept your forgiveness and move on with my life, the life you are calling me to live. Help me to seek you first, to establish an intimate relationship with you. Make me a new creature in you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

ARE YOU LOOKING OUT FOR THE CHURCH?

Bill O’Riley says, “I’m looking out for you.” Have you heard someone say, “I am just looking out for the best interest of the church? Just what does that mean?

SCRIPTURE:

Read Acts 7: 54-59 “When they (Sanhedrin) heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth….But he (Stephen)being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up into heaven, and saw the glory of God…and they cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at the young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.”

Acts 8:1-4 “And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church, which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every, and haling men and women committed them to prison. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.”

Philippians 3:6 He spoke of himself, “Concerning zeal, persecuting the church…”

Acts9: 1-2 And Saul, yet breathing out threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest…that if he found any…whether men or women…he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

LESSON:

I usually, jump back a few feet when someone says, “I am looking out for the best interest of the church,” because, the first thing that comes to my mind is Paul. Was it not ironic that Paul, one of the most religious men of the day, was the very one that was set on destroying the “true” church. Not only was he against Christianity, he sought will all diligence to kill all Christians, and anything to do with “kingdom growth.” Does looking out for church mean, going to church every Sunday, creating programs and seeing they thrive, learning scripture so we can condemn our brothers and sisters, wear our crosses and other religious symbols and adorning our cars with fish and religious decals to identify our religious beliefs, etc, etc, … Upon occasion the religious take it upon themselves to “keep the church pure,” by closing the doors to those who do not look or worship as they do. Some take it upon themselves to thrash and bash the minister of God who seeks to follow Him, to preach the Truth, who are bold enough to stand up in the face of opposition. All these things are done in the name of religion. Religion is about “looking like” but Christianity is seeking to be obedient to God regardless of religious traditions.

APPLICATION:

1. Do you find it strange that a believer in God could set out to destroy all that Jesus died for?

2. What similarities do you see about Paul’s religion and that of the religious people of today?

3. What are some things that are not Christ like but are done in the name of religion?

4. Give some examples where we hold traditions as having equal authority as Scripture?

5. How do we allow our relationship with God to be reduced to a legalistic list of rules and rituals?

PRAYER:

Dear Father, Forgive me of the times that I have been indifferent to individuals or mistreated them in the name of being religious. Create in me a zeal to be about “kingdom” growth, instead of conforming to religious traditions. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:1 BEING RELIGIOUS ≠ BEING CHRISTIAN?

Can you believe in God, know all the scriptures, and attend church every Sunday and still not be a Christian? The best example of this is Paul’s life.

Scripture:

Romans 1:1 “Paul…. (We know that Paul was not always Paul, he was known as Saul of Tarsus.)

Philippians 3:5-6 “…circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.”

Lesson:

As we begin the study of Romans, we must begin with Paul. Paul was Jewish and all Jews were circumcised, an outward symbol of the covenant between the Jewish people and God signifying he was a native Israelite, not a proselyte having been converted to Jewish belief. Born into the tribe of Benjamin, one of the 12 tribes of Israel. A tribe descended from Rachel, the remained faithful when all the other tribes seceded. The soil on which the Jerusalem Temple stood belonged to this tribe. He was a Hebrew of the Hebrews, meaning he “purebred,” both his parents were an Israelite, therefore he was not a Gentile, (non believer). He was a Pharisee, the strictest sect of religion. He studied in the Greek schools, and the synagogue schools, learning Hebrew as well as Aramaic. He studied under the greatest Jewish scholar, Gamaliel. He assisted the High Priest and other officials in carrying out the Temple worship. Later he became a rabbi and then became a member of the Office of the High Priest who carried out the worship in the Jerusalem temple and participated in the Sanhedrin. Nothing would stop his zeal when it came to upholding the political structure of the day. He thought Jesus was threatening harmony between the Jews and Roman government. Faultless when it came to his legalistic righteousness. Practiced the traditions of the church and because Jesus did not meet the expectations of the Religious sect, Pharisees or Sadducees, he, Saul, sought to rid the world of Christians. Wow....Can any of your credits match Pauls? Mine cannot? However, by listing his own credentials, Paul made a point that none of these things have anything to do with our salvation and unless we have a true relationship with Christ it is meaningless. Keep in mind, these things were said of Paul, before he a became a Christian. In other words, being religious is not equivalent to being Christian.

Application:

1.   Can you believe in God, know all the scriptures, and attend church every Sunday and still miss the mark? How do you know?
2.     Can it be possible that we are so bent on practicing traditions and keeping the laws that we fail to see Jesus?
3.     If Satan can keep us from doing what God wants us to do, by getting us to do many “good church things” then he can accomplish his goals. What good things do we do in the name of religion that might be hindering us from what God really want us to do?
4.     Are you more religious basing on what you are doing, or Christian, thus focusing on Christ and what he has done for you?

Prayer:

Father, help us to be more focused on you and our relationship than about doing all those things that seem to be good in themselves. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Romans Bible Study

Well, I am launching my first on-line Bible Study. Our Monday night, MY HOUSE @ 6:30, I WANNABE....LIKE JESUS, study has been going on for several weeks now. We did some back to basics the first couple of nights. Now we have started the book of Romans. I will be using my personal blog IWANNABE...LIKE JESUS solely for this study.

It is not to late to join the study. Anyone can join at any time. I hope you will consider the Bible Study. There are three ways to participate in our Bible Study:

1) Monday Night, MY HOUSE @ 6:30, Bible Study: If you live nearby and can participate in, MY HOUSE @ 6:30, we would love to have you. My husband and I converted our garage awhile back so we could use it for whatever it needs to Be... a place not only for our car, but for large family gatherings, choir parties, Sunday School events, Senior Adult outings, scrapbooking, sewing, or whatever it needs to be. So now it is referred to as our women's bible study location. MY HOUSE @ 6:30 (106 Twin Lake Drive). Each meeting we cover as many verses as we can, then we pick up where we left off for the next week. Participants are given a studysheet to use during the study.

2) Online Bible Study, Each week I will divide the study into sections and write it as a blog post. The format will be: introductory statement followed by the scripture, lesson, application, and simple prayer. Keep your own journal and comment or ask questions using the comment section. I will respond to you via the comment section at the end of each blog post. We are so sorry that you are not able to be with us to dialogue and discuss the truths that we will be discussing, however the Holy Spirit will be there to assist you and speak into your life as you go through these scriptures yourself or with a friend. 3) Powerpoint and/or Studysheet Study If you miss a meeting or would like a copy of the Powerpoint Presentation and/or studysheet you may request it by email and I will send it to you.

There is only one promise that I can make you, and that is, God's word does not return void. The purpose in our study is not so much that we change our behavior but that God's word will change our whole identity...that we will have the heart and mind of Christ.

When God Says, Enough is Enough?

Does God ever say, "Enough is Enough?" When and if he does, what happens? When we speak of calamity in our lives we have to consider why we experienced the fate. Some individuals would be quick to say that a person has sin in their lives. We know by Jobs story that this is not always true. While we cannot be too quick to call something punishment we must continue to search our hearts and seek God in our lives. Only God knows when our calamities are in direct result of our disobedience. A good parent disciplines us and teaches us right from wrong. God is a loving but just, therefore, punishment comes when we are rebelliously disobedient. In Jeremiah 44:20-23 the scripture is very clear about disobedience, "When the Lord could no longer endure your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became an object of cursing and a desolate waste without inhabitants, as it is today. Because you have burned incense and have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed him or followed his law or his decrees or his stipulations, this disaster has come upon you, as you now see."

This is a hard truth isn't it? None of us want to assume that God might be trying to get our attention. Maybe he has had our attention for a long time but we just refuse to acknowledge that we (an individual or a nation) see or hear him. Make no mistake. We are told that, "sheep hear their shepherds voice," and we are accountable for what we hear. According to the scripture there is a time when God says, "Enough is enough." As you look around, what evidence do you see of God bringing disaster on our nation for our disobedience?
